Dryer Not Heating? Here’s What Might Be Going Wrong

Does your dryer turn but not heat up? It’s no fun when you have a clothes dryer that won’t produce any heat. Whatever type of dryer you have — gas or electric — this can be caused by a few common offenders. Now, we’re going to take a closer look at why your dryer may not be heating correctly and what you can do about that.

1. Faulty Heating Element (Electric Dryers Only)

One of the most common parts that fail with an electric dryer is the heating element. It’s also to generate heat inside the drum. Even if your dryer runs if it breaks it won’t get hot. You’ll have to remove the back panel of the dryer and look at the heating element to see if it’s broken. Need to replace if it looks broken or worn.

2. Tripped Circuit Breaker (Electric Dryers)

A 240-volt circuit is needed to run electric dryers. The dryer may still run, but it won’t heat, if one of the two breakers trips. Start by ensuring your home’s electrical panel hasn’t tripped the circuit breaker. Firstly, if it has, then reset it and see if that gets your dryer heating again.

3. Blown Thermal Fuse

Its a Thermal fuse… a safety device to prevent heater from overheating. When the dryer gets too hot, the thermal fuse will blow and will cut the power to the heating element. Your dryer will still spin but the drum won’t heat if your thermal fuse has gone and blown. You can test the thermal fuse with a multimeter for yourself to see if that is the issue or seek out a professional to do the diagnosis for you.

4. Clogged Ventilation System

One of the most overlooked reasons for a dryer not heating is a clogged vent or lint trap. If your dryer vent is blocked, the airflow is restricted like this, which means that the dryer won’t be able to minimize the airflow and generate heat. Check to make sure the lint trap is clean, and the vent hose is not obstructed. Having the vent professionally cleaned once a year is a good tip to prevent future problems and improve your dryer’s efficiency.

5. Faulty Igniter (Gas Dryers)

The igniter of the gas dryer lights the gas that heats the air. Failure of the igniter will result in the gas not lighting, and thus, the dryer will not heat. If there is no heat even though the dryer is running, that’s a sign of a faulty igniter. I think all you have to do is replace the igniter on this one to get things back up and running.

6. Broken Thermostat

The temperature inside your dryer is controlled by the thermostat. If it does become defective it will block the dryer from reaching the correct heat setting or even from heating at all. If your appliance is not heating, you may have to replace a faulty thermostat to get heat back.

There are several reasons why your dryer isn’t heating—everything from a failed heating element or blown circuit breaker to clogged vents and a bad igniter. Some of these can be fixed simply with basic troubleshooting while others will need to be repaired by pro. Of course, if your desperate DIY fixes didn’t work and your dryer still isn’t working, you’ll need to bring in a professional.
